Not Very Horsey? Don’t Worry! You’ll Fit in at the Hampton Classic

My son (who is taking riding lessons) and I attended the opening day of the Hampton Classic this past Sunday. We were rewarded with a beautiful day, good food, lots of fun fashion and amazing riding. There was so much to feature, I wasn’t sure where to begin, but my son inspired me to feature the family-friendliness and diverse activities of the Classic. If anyone thinks that this show is just for the extremely horsey set, or that it would be too boring for kids, is simply wrong.

There was just so much to do. After a long drive, my son was hungry, so we grabbed a pizza at Pizza Luca by Stable Row. I’ll get into more detailed food reviews later, but we gobbled it up! Any kid can easily find something to eat, but I truly recommend the pizza (side note to Pizza  Luca: please add more of your delicious mozzarella and basil to the margherita!!!).

Off to the practice/warm up rings for an up close and personal with the competitors. The mounts were absolutely gorgeous, as were the riders; I was so jealous that I wasn’t competing or at least simply sitting on a horse. We also caught some of the short stirrup classes (soooo cute).

She did so well!

We then toured the swanky VIP tent, but my son was anxious to get to the kid’s area, so I was only allowed to pretend to be a VIP for 5 minutes. Long enough, however, for a quick glass of Wolffer Estate’s white – yum!

The kids area was (is) fabulous! There is a full size play ground, petting zoo (with very CLEAN and friendly animals), a cookie decorating station (thanks Citarella!), and an art station. The little kids can also join in the horse action with an adorable pony ride. We loved the gallery of children’s art – some was truly amazing. We can’t be there on Optimum Kids’ Day, but no matter, we had plenty to do anyway.

This takes me to the short walk over to the boutique gallery. Even if you don’t want to tack up and jump an oxer, you can find some amazing fashions, fun crafts, quality bags and farmer’s market specialties (I’ll get into the farmer’s market in my food review yet to come).

We then watched the main event of the day, the $50,000 Clear Channel Hunter Derby. I love watching the hunters – I know many people love the thrill of the jumpers, but the smoothness and grace of the hunter horses really is something to see. Congrats to Patricia Griffith, on Black Label, who won the Derby!

My Own Private Classic

My new beau, Sonny
My new beau, Sonny

I would never be able to show at a place like the Hampton Classic or the the American Gold Cup;  hacking around the lesson ring is just fine for me. I’m a late-to-the–game horse rider, who started only 1 1/2 years ago. I have to say, taking up a sport after kids was the best thing I ever did (well, okay, besides my children).

Today, I jumped my amazing palomino lesson horse, Sonny, over my first jump. I didn’t win a ribbon, but I sure felt like it. I can’t imagine how amazing competitors in any show, let alone a Grand Prix, must feel after completing a clean run. I need to thank and give full credit to my amazing instructor, Hannie at Greenlawn Equestrian Center. I learned more in 2 months from her than I did the entire year at my old barn. I don’t have any pictures or video of my ride (my jumping was so sloppy, I wouldn’t want anyone to see), but I am attaching some shots of Hannie riding a course set up by her 12 year old campers.

Have any of you started something later in life and lived to tell the story? If so, I would love to hear. I also want to give my friends hope that life doesn’t end after 30. Now more than ever, I’m excited to cover the Classic this Sunday. I’m going to be so torn about what to cover first: the horses and competitors in the ring, what people are wearing or what they are eating!!

Monday Morning Shopping Trip: To Dream the Hermes Dream

I probably don’t have to tell you this, but Hermes makes some of the most beautiful items in the world. I think their bags are amazing, but as an equestrian, I cannot help but drool over more horsey items. In celebration of this week’s horse show in Bridgehampton (the Classic), I am listing some of my “if I had tons of money I would get these” items.

I cannot wait to see and feel their saddles in person when I got to their booth later this week.

Hermes produced a video named (in English) “Hearts and Crafts”. It’s a beautifully made short featuring the Hermes artisans and their craft. It helped me understand why their goods are so beautiful, durable and expensive.

Who, What, When, WEAR and Why? – YOU decide and WIN….

Who?  me 🙂

What?  attending the Hampton Classic

When?  August 27 and September 1

WEAR? – NO CLUE!!!

Why?  I don’t want to look like a total frumpy amateur mess….

As I prepare my story angle(s), interview questions, photography options and other legitimate concerns, I’m worrying about what I’m going to wear. Is this important? Well, sure!

Normally, I’m pretty good at self-styling, but in this case I thought I would have some fun. I’m posting my options below and I’ll let YOU decide the final outfit. Please vote by commenting below, direct message, email, or facebook. The outfit with the most votes wins!

Okay, here’s the best part – everyone who votes will be automatically entered to win a super cute Marc by Marc Jacobs iPhone 5 cover, thanks to Net-a-Porter.com (one of my favorite online retailers). marcbymarkfront

If you spread the word and have a friend sign up and vote, you’ll be entered twice! If you have two friends, we’ll enter you even more, and so on.  Just make sure they let me know who referred them to my blog so I can note who you are!! Oh, and if you think you have any better ideas, I’d like to see these too!!

Please note that I may not be able to wear the winning look 😦 It may be sold out in my size, it may not be on big enough sale or just plain unavailable by the time I need it – I will do my best!!!

Finally a blog combining all three….

of my favorite things – food, fashion and fun (mostly in the form of horse riding). It seems a strange combination, but at events like the upcoming Hampton Classic in Bridgehampton, NY, all three are on display.  The chef in me is dying to sample the foods from local providers specializing in local farm fare, the fashionista in me wants to go to view the summer duds and amazing equestrian styles on the fabulous Hamptons hotties, and the rider in me dreams that it is I, an equestrian novice, out on the course with enough talent to compete.

I’ll be posting all things foodie, fashion, and equine….maybe the stars will align and I’ll be covering the Classic in person. Stay tuned….!
