“Speaking Dolls” Spoke to Me

Manon Leloup is one of the most sought after high fashion models on earth. With her long legs, giraffe-like neck, striking features and blue-grey eyes, she’s been gracing the runways of designers around the globe. What a dream job – from down here on planet normal, her life seems so glamorous, so wonderful, so luxurious – right?

Not always so, says Miss Leloup, who teamed up with Parisian director, Niels Benoist, to create the short documentary film Speaking Dolls, which gives the world a peek into the everyday life of a working high fashion model. It can be purchased for $25 or rented (1 week) for $3.99 on Vimeo.com. She takes us along for her long days, insane schedules and walks in the sky high stilettos that keep these girls on their toes during the grueling months of the Fashion Week season.

I was expecting a “poor little pretty girl” theme, but instead got a snapshot of Leloup’s reality without judgement, without an agenda. I found it refreshing and interesting. She wanted to show the fashion world from the model’s perspective as models are mainly seen and not heard. I think she achieved this, although I would have liked it to be longer. You be the judge.

I would still love the opportunity to look and live like they do, but at least now without such reckless abandon.
